I just love this for very obvious reasons:
I guess I have the attention span of a gnat.
I'm not sure why when I turn on Austin City Limits, it's Kenny Chesney, but I sure wish the planets would realign to allow me to catch something like this:
So, some time ago, a friend of mine commented that it's not a crime to love Pop music, that some Pop music can actually be very good. Indeed, my intelligent friend, indeed it can be. As the case with Crowded House, for example. My question for the producers of ACL is this, "What up with no camera on Mr. Nick Seymour?!" Geesh!
I'm so exhausted I can't really figure out what I am thinking at any moment of any day. I have preferred to reserve my creative energies towards any school work I have going. Currently, school work consists of 3 or so Photoshop projects, a complex bookbinding assignment (French door binding, my subject matter is political) and 6 paintings, varying from 14"x18" to 40"x60". Needless to say, I have left my Voxing on the back[est] burner.
One subject for which I always have time is Mr. Nick Seymour. This clip made my day:
I was just talking about Hair (both the Broadway musical and my need for a haircut to lessen my likeness to a certain Governor of Alaska).
One other thing... Anyone want to take me to see Ben Folds on October 3? It's practically my birthday and, well, it's Ben Folds!
It just today dawned on me that I failed to commemorate the birth date of Mr. Nick Seymour on the 9th day of this month. Oh how I love you, Nick, so please accept my apologies.
I won't go into how I realized this oversight, but I will tell you that I unearthed this little tidbit in his own handwriting somewhere on my travels through the interweb:
I don't frequently find myself in elevators - not that I have any issues with or about them - but I often find myself making similar comparisons.
Case 1: That is an empty lot with a garage, not a Parking Lot at the State Fair !
Case 2: That's an alley, not a urinal at a sporting event!
Case 3: This is a public restroom, not your personal phone booth!
Oh, Nick! We are soul mates. I just know it!
Being in the delicate financial situation that I am often in, I have no business purchasing music or movies, or even renting movies. That said, I often comfort myself with such things as music and movies (the latter often borrowed from the library), and the truth is that my addictions could be far worse than they are, so.
Addiction to Music:
I recently mentioned buying Betchadupa's "Aiming For Your Head" from Australia. I am quite happy with that purchase. Keeping it all in the family, I followed Betchadupa's Liam Finn with his Dad, Neil, and his newest Crowded House release, "Time on Earth." What planets line up every time a Finn is born that makes them all musical geniuses? Seriously, though. Neil, you are beyond any music legend that has ever lived. Ever (even Bath Robe Brian!). Crowded House has reformed after the tragic loss of Paul Hester to play a new game of tug of war with my heartstrings. New drummer Matt Sherrod is a lovely compliment to Neil, Mark Hart and (the man who is my soul mate) Nick Seymour. No kidding. Nick, if you're reading this: You are IT.
Addiction to Books:
I treated myself to Painting People: Figure Painting Today. It's a compilation of contemporary painters and I just want to lick the pages. I might have, in fact, I'll just never confess which ones.
Addiction to Film:
I am seeing a few complete films in my summer film class, and more than a few clips and scenes from movies that make me want to watch things again. Often, the films I want to watch again aren't the selections I saw in class, but my mind does have a tendency to wander. I recently borrowed and re-watched a few things from the library: "Wilbur Wants to Kill Himself," "Kitchen Stories," and "In the Bedroom." I could not wait for the library to make "Little Children" available, so I bought a Pre-Viewed copy from the rental place on the corner. Todd Field does not disappoint. I might seek out a copy of "Ruby In Paradise," when I first developed my crush on him. "In the Bedroom" always gets me back to Andre Dubus (see next paragraph), so I also watched "We Don't Live Here Anymore." Please! Andre Dubus stories enacted by Peter Krause and Mark Ruffalo (and two actresses whose names escape me...). I have also requested "The Five Obstructions" from the library, as it is simply too good not to watch over and over. All this movie viewing, by the way, is causing me some trouble, because I stay up late at night watching them. Not exactly helpful when my usual bedtime is about 8:30. You could say I'm a bit knackered by 3:00 in the afternoon.
Back to Books:
So... "Little Children" has me wanting to read more Tom Perotta. His stories always translate well into films. I have been re-reading Andre Dubus stories, "Killings" and "Adultery" for starters. He was an astonishing writer. I'm looking forward to what is supposed to be a beautiful weekend, so I might just whip up an early dinner tomorrow and go outside to read in the yard.
Again with the music...
My local independently-owned music store was unable to obtain a copy of Betchadupa's 2004 release, "Aiming For Your Head" and I was forced to buy it through a popular on-line auction site from Australia. I was so pleased with the service from the on-line seller, I might just buy some more Aussie music from him.
I'm quite pleased with the album, too. There's a video of the single, "My Army of Birds and Gulls" here:

The audio and video don't sync, but it's still a visual and aural treat. If you know me, you know I love anything Finn, and young Liam seems to be having no trouble establishing himself with Betchadupa and will have a solo release ("I'll Be Lightning") later this summer. Between Liam and the new Crowded House release ("Time on Earth"), I'll have plenty of Finn to listen to for some time. My apologies to the other members of Betchadupa and the revised Crowded House (oh, but I especially love Nick Seymour), but my Finn obsession is not going away any time soon.
Different Music:
As I expand my musical tastes, I realize my answer to "What type of music do you like?" has changed over the years. Substantially. While I can't say I agree with his opinion, I DO love funny people, and Bob Newhart is one of them:
I don't like country music, but I don't mean to denigrate those who do. And for the people who like country music, denigrate means "put down". Bob Newhart
